The exhibition
The work, and the place it was made
Clay and Kin brings together the ceramicists of Kindred, a creative ecology of artists, makers and dreamers. Kindred is home to over 425 artists, around 100 of whom are ceramicists, and 45 of us are showing work in Clay and Kin.
This exhibition is a chance to show how diverse and unique we are as ceramic artists. The exhibition space opens straight into the main ceramics studio, so you can see the curated finished pieces and then walk into the place they were thrown, built, glazed and fired. There are no staged demonstrations. It is simply us, creating.
The show runs from functional pieces made for everyday use through to one off sculptural pieces, so there is a lot to look at across a wide range of prices. Sales are arranged directly between you and the artist. Every piece is numbered, with the details listed in the handout, and the artist board has a QR code for each of us so you can find whoever made it.
Welcoming people from the local community into our space and celebrating connection through art is fundamental to the Kindred philosophy, and we hope you feel that as part of our exhibition.
Our guest curator
Lee Young
Lee Young has spent the last three years focusing on art and ceramics, supporting arts organisations and businesses with exhibitions and projects including the Portsmouth Open Studio Event in 2024 and 2025.
After leading The Box Gallery in Southsea, a commercial gallery championing local full-time artists, he found that working directly with artists and bringing their work to new audiences was where he wanted to put his energy. He went on to found Behold, an initiative that introduces experienced full-time artists across a range of media to new people and places around the country, with the aim of getting original fine art into people's homes and lives.
